Obesity is still on the rise in England and shockingly 26% of children aged 10 and 11 in some areas of chesterfield are obese, ranking in the top 3% of all council wards in England. 

 A further 41 % of 10 and 11 year olds are overweight and 28% of 4-5 year olds in north east Derbyshire are overweight. This means that more than 2 in 5 children are considered heavier than that is healthy. 2 factors that contribute to this are eating habits and a lack of physical activity. Improving physical activity not only improves health and well being but also shows changes to behaviour, positive effects on your state of mind, more ‘good’ energy whilst getting you out. out into your town/city. And after being locked away for so long you may just be amazed by it.

 Across England: The harm of obesity in children and young people is growing each year and has tripled in the last 30 years. The U.K. is now ranked 9th in the world for overweight prevalence in children. 31.7% of boys and 30.7% of girls across England fall into the category of being overweight or obese. A mere 20% of boys are meeting the minimum government recommended levels of physical activity and the 15% go girls meeting these levels is even worse. 

The change has to start now! Being overweight by 60% can lead to severe conditions later in life: type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, high blood pressure, cancer and an early death.
 There is no way to sugar coat it given the alarming statistics, changes have to happen NOW! Among those overweight and obese certain characteristics and events also occur, on he emotional and behavioural side you will find bullying, low self esteem, stigmatisation and school absence can increase.

 From the health side be prepared for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, pre diabetes, bone and joint problems and breathing difficulties leading to poor health and a risk of premature mortality in adult life. This is not something we can just ignore, not for ourselves or our children. Get active, get eating healthier and get involved as a family. 

Physical activity alone can strengthen children’s bones, muscles, hearts and lungs, it can also improve coordination, balance, concentration, improve sleep patterns, posture and flexibility and helps keep a healthy weight. Screen time is also on the up with recent statistics showing children between the ages of 8-16 spend a ridiculous 7.5 hours on average...per day! That can be added up to a whopping 114 full days in front of a screen. Phones, tablets, computers, consoles and TVs are hard to get away from, so why not put them to good use?
